Board of Directors

Herman Hewitt is a licensed real estate broker and manages his own company, H.F. Hewitt Realty since 2002. He is also the president and CEO of another company that manages private coops and condos and a licensed contractor. Herman has been an active member of the community since 1978. He is currently the president/chairperson of various community and housing associations. Herman Hewitt has been the president of the Board of Directors of PMHA since inception.

Kil J. Yi has a Ph.D. in History and is currently employed as a Professor of History at Bergen County Community College in New Jersey. Kil J. Yi has been an active member of the Association since becoming a member. He has served as the building representative for 165 Suffolk Street from 1994-1996, was active on the Resident Council and served on the Board from 1994-1996 as well. He is a current Board Member and the Vice President since being re-elected in 2000.

Hubert Rozario has a BA in Economics and English Literature from Notre Dame College in Bangladesh. He was employed in the banking industry for over 12 years and is currently the comptroller for a commercial business in NYC. Mr. Rozario was the representative for his building from 2000-2007 and served on the Supervisory Committee of a Christian Credit Union.

Veronique Doumbe is a long time member of the Lower East Side People’s Mutual Housing Association Inc., and also a long time resident of the Lower East Side. She’s sat on a board of directors for NYWIFT.org from 2009 to 2012 and so is familiar with the importance of being a board member. She is interested in being on the board of PMHA because she is interested in serving her community.

Bettina (Tine) Kindermann, a German-born artist and singer, is a long time East Village resident and community activist who has served as secretary on the LESPMHA board for 3 years. She is currently Chair of the Governance Committee on the board of the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural Center and has in the past served as Chair of the Artists Alliance, Inc. board of directors. Tine is a trained mediator and has worked as a community mediator for both Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and Safe Horizon.

Sally Davies moved from Canada to NYC to complete her college degree in 1983, and has lived on the Lower East Side ever since. Sally was actively involved in the historical east village art scene, exhibiting her work with the Gracie Mansion Gallery on Saint Marks Place and went on to exhibit nationally. Her work is in the 9/11 museum in NYC and in the Houston Museum of Modern Art. In 2014 she was awarded a New York City Council Citation for her ongoing “photo documenting” of the Lower East Side. Sally has been a resident of PMHA since 2000.

Alice Arnold is a documentary filmmaker, designer and an educator. Her work, which explores the urban environment, public space issues, environmental sustainability and visual culture, has been screened at the Museum of Modern Art, among other festivals and venues. She is a Fulbright Fellow (Film, Hong Kong) and a recipient of a New York Fellowship of the Arts (Photography). Her goals as a board member are to contribute to the organization’s mission of providing affordable housing in New York City and to help make LESPMHA buildings more environmentally sustainable.

E. Thea Lucas immigrated to the USA from the Netherlands in 1949. She graduated with a law degree from the University of Utrecht in December 1948. She worked for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for 40 years starting as a secretary in the legal department and ending her career as a Tour Coordinator for the Eastern Region. Thea was on the It’s Time Board and was a member of Clinton-Henry HDFC Board which was later absorbed into the LESPMHA Board.

Lillian Nazario has resided on the Lower East Side her entire life & she knows her community.  She is interested in serving the organization because she understands the residents’ needs and concerns. She’d like to be a voice for the tenants, bringing their concerns to decision makers so that those concerns will be addressed and resolved. She graduated Berkeley College in Manhattan where she majored in Marketing and obtained a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. She is on the Forsyth Street Festival committee which happens every year during the summer and also on campaigns for District Leader/Councilman, etc.

Barbara O’Connor has worked for The Lower East Side People’s Mutual Housing Association for over 18 years. During that time, she has learned so much about Mutual Housing and how important it is to have affordable housing and for tenants to be actively involved in their community. She started out as a bookkeeper and worked her way up to be the Comptroller of the Company. At first, this was just a job but later she realized how much this company meant to her. I am proud to say that after I retired I was asked to be the Treasurer of The Board.

Teresita Andujar is a single mother of an 18 year old son. She has lived in United Mutual Housing since 2001. She finds a wonderful sense of community in this neighborhood which has been lost in many parts of New York City. In addition to being an active advocate of tenant-rights, she has been a supportive parent of her son’s education. He has been accepted into Saint John’s University and will begin studies in the fall. She served three years on the Board of Education Alliance. The first year she served on the Grievance Committee; the second year she served as Treasurer; and the third year she served as Vice President. As Vice President she met with Senator Hillary Clinton to discuss the educational budget, hired new staff for the Educational Alliance, and provided First Aid and CPR training to employees and parents.
